Narrative NonFiction
Students will know and be able to:
-Know what a narrative nonfiction book looks like -utilize titles, headings, table of contents, introductions, to preview the text before reading -use strategies to help them determine the important ideas in the text -use explicit information from the text to infer the importance of a person or event -use strategies to synthesize information and big ideas -ask and answer questions about the text -identify the main idea and supporting details -retell significant events in sequential order -compare/contrast important points in two texts on the same topic -use time/sequence and elements of cause/effect to synthesize information |
Following Characters Into Meaning
Students will know and be able to:
-notice and discuss both the external and internal traits of a character to deepen their understanding of text -visualize important story events to deepen understanding of setting (time and place) -predict logically before, during, and after reading, and revise those predictions as the story unfolds, based on what has been discovered about a character -make inferences to deepen understanding of a character's feelings, actions, and motivations and make predictions about how the story will unfold -draw conclusions about character actions, relationships and how the story will unfold -participate in partner and small group discussions in order to deepen their understanding of character and text, as a whole |

NONFICTION GENRE STUDY
Students will...
• use strategies that help them to comprehend text. • select and aply strategies to enhance their comprehension. • think and write about the text they're reading. • locate and identify features of nonfiction text that aid and enhance comprehension of text. • utilize titles, headings, contents, introductions, and any other features provided in the text to preview, or "set up" the text before reading. • identify the main idea and supporting details with an expository nonfiction text. |
